The 2003 Newark Trophy
The Newark Trophy was a more mixed affair this year, with John McPaul going to have some competition to keep his trophy. With the arrival of our new crop of riders who have turned up to ride the Cloch course regulary it was now their chance to ride the Newark course. A number of good time where posted and certainly set the cat among the pigeons in Handicap stakes.
On the last race it was a cold and cloudy night and riders had a good tail wind on the outward leg. Hugh Jamieson coming back to better form turned in a 21.52 but George McCarter did another great ride with a 22.01. The overall League was won by John McPaul for the third year in a row which has caused some speculation as to whether he has actually lost or broken the trophy and has to win it each year so nobody will find out!
What is encouraging though is when you look at the number of riders taking part not only in the Newark League but also in the Alex Hunter Summer League hopefully this bodes well for the future of the club.
