Ian Loughran and myself recently attended a meeting with the Police set up at the request of the Millport community council-
This years Millport will be a 'make or break' year for the whole future of the event. Following a large number of complaints from other road users of abusive language and aggressive behaviour from competitors in the road race -local traders, in conjunction with the community council, have petitioned the Police to request that the event does not take place on the Island. They see it as having a negative impact on the their trade as tourists have been returning from their cycle or walk round the island with reports of having been shouted at to clear the way and in several cases this was accompanied by swearing and abuse.
The road round Millport is well known for being 'cycle friendly' with the low volume of traffic meaning it is ideal for families with young kids to trundle round and enjoy a fun day on the bike. It is therefore a essential that we make special allowance for this and show respect and courtesy to all road users. Everyone knows that being on Millport means having to dodge large groups of fun cyclists wobbling about all over the road. Its what Millort is famous for and its what brings the majority of visitors to the Island and supports the local economy.
The bottom line is - if there are any complaints or instances of swearing / abusive behaviour this year then there will be no further road racing on Millport.
